NASA AMES 40 X 80 FOOT WIND TUNNEL

NASA Quest is very excited to share actual wind tunnel data online for the first time! We also have lesson plans for students to derive meaning from this data. Runs 43 and 44 were collected with the motor off and are the best runs for calculating lift and drag. Runs 61 through 63 were collected with the engine running these are the best runs for calculating the pitch moment.


Note:This data is preliminary data. NASA reserves the right to make changes to the data as the result of further analysis and reduction. Any conclusions derived from these data are not endorsed by NASA.



KEY:

Wing Area = in square feet

MAC = Mean Aerodynamic Chord in feet

Alpha = Angle of Attack in degrees (+ nose up)

Beta = Angle of Sideslip in degrees (+ nose right)

QA = Dynamic Pressure in pounds per square foot

Velocity = Airflow Velocity of Tunnel in knots

Re = Reynolds Number, dimensionless

Canard Angle = Angle of Canard Deflection in degrees (+ canard trailing edge down)

Rudder Angle = Angle of Rudder Deflection in degrees (+ rudder trailing edge left)

R Wing Warp = Angle of Right Wing Warp in degrees (+ wing tip down)

L Wing Warp = Angle of Left Wing Warp in degrees (+ wing tip down)

Lift, w = Lift Force in wind axis in pounds

Drag, w = Drag Force in wind axis in pounds

Pitch, w = Pitch Moment in wind axis in ft*pounds

CL,w = Lift Coefficient

CD,w = Drag Coefficient

CM,w = Pitch Coefficient

L/D = Lift to Drag Ratio
