Introduction
The Purpose
The purpose of the Wright Flyer Profect is to find out and commemorate
what the Wright Brothers accomplished, by generating a body of experimental
data and analysis which describe the characteristics of the first successful
airplane.
The First Wright Flyer
The 1903 Wright Flyer required considerable skill by the pilot, so much
so that no precise replica has been successfully flown sine that eventual
day in December 1903. The aircraft acelerated forty feet along a wooden
starting rail on level ground annd then rose into the air. Both brothers
flew that day. The era of flight has begun.
About The Experiment
The Los Angeles Section of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics
(AAIA) Wright Flyer Project volunteers have constructed a full scale replica
of the 1903 Wright Flyer. NASA is supporting the test in the NASA Ames
Research Center 40*80 foot wind tunnel. The model is made of wood, wire
and cloth as was the original aircraft. The wind tunnel enviroment produces
loads on the model greater than those generated in free flight, and the
test duration will be far longer than the expected use of the original
structure.
The model includes remotely controlled canards, rudders and wing warp.
The positions of these control surfaces, and their actuators, will be
measured.
