Activity B: Funnel Follies

This activity helps demonstrate Bernoulli's Principle and how changes in air pressure influence lift on an airplane's wing.

diagram showing moving air creating pressure

 Materials

Ping pony ball, funnel (Use a plastic, metal, or glass funnel, or make your own from a large index card)

 Procedure

Lean over with the funnel in your mouth, holding the ping pong ball inside the funnel. Predict what will happen if you blow hard through the funnel and let go of the ball at the same time. Try it and see. Explain the results.

 Extension

Challenge students to devise ways to keep a bubble from hitting the ground, without touching it with their hands or with any others objects. Think Bernoulli!
