CONTESTS - Grades 4-8

These contests are a part of a series of chats, bios and journals that discuss designs for flight at different speeds called the The Regimes of Flight.

Regimes Class Mural, January 25 - March 2, 2000

Congratulations to the Winners!!

Choose one of the regimes of flight, (low, medium, high, supersonic, hypersonic) classes will submit a mural that visually depicts not only the definition and description of the category, but also visually depicts aircraft from that category (Note: Key word "visually" means no words).

Murals should be no larger than 2'x2'.

Classes will submit their murals via fax, mail or electronically, with entries being judged per grade level.

  1. For Fax Submission:
    • Send your fax to NASA Quest (650) 604-1913.

    • Include a coverpage with the Entry Information listed below.

    • All faxes must be received by March 2, 2000

  2. For E-mail Submission:
    • In the e-mail message include the Entry Information listed below.

    • Send your in an e-mail message to:

    • All entries must be e-mailed no later than March 2, 2000.

  3. . For Postal Submission:
    • On the back of the paper include the Entry Information listed below.

    • Put it in an envelope and mail it to the address listed below:

    Judging criteria:

    Entries will be judged according to the following criteria:

    • How well the information for the regime is visually depicted

    • Accuracy of the information presented

    • Use of appropriate aircraft

    • Artistic creativity

    New Aircraft Design March 3 - April 14, 2000

    For each regime, students individually will design a "new" aircraft that would fly in said regime. Using the student handout "New Aircraft Guidesheet", students will complete the guidesheet by drawing and labeling a diagram of their new aircraft and describing its usage. See an example.

    Students will submit their forms via fax, mail or electronically, with entries being judged per grade level.

    Art Contest, April 14 - May 26, 2000

    For each regime a black-and-white line drawing of an aircraft from said regime will be posted. Students individually or in partners will reproduce the given aircraft in one of the following artists' style. Students are allowed to use a medium of their choice (crayon, pencil, charcoal, computer graphics, paint, watercolor, etc.). Students will be judged per grade level category.
