RE: [Wallops] What are the current trends/thoughts/ideas in aviation that are being received with the same skepticism as the Wright brothers experienced in the early 20th century? What path would you recommend to a high school student interested in a career in aeronautics? How would you approach the concept of ownership in space?
I believe that anytime an ideal is put forth that is significantly beyond the current state-of-the-art there is going to be skepticism. This may be somewhat healthy because it serves as a sort of sanity check on the ideas. However, too much criticism can also kill an idea so there has to be a balance. The path that is most beneficial to students is one that focuses on science and art. I say this because all ideas a student has may receive inspiration through art, but in order to act on the idea one has to have a solid foundation in science. Ownership in space is beyond my expertise, but it brings up many interesting questions in law, ethics, government, and business.

RE: [david] I have read about designing the plane for investigate Mars. And I am wondering about how the plane would keep flying in the hot environment in Mars. Thermodynamics systems is the only requirement for the container itself to land into Mars?
The mars plane is a substantial challenge because we must design the plan on the limited information we currently have on the planet's atmosphere. You are correct, thermodynamics will be an issue but it is believed that we currently have the materials that would protect the structural integrity of the plane from the heat. The most significant challenge is not in the shape the craft will take, but rather on how it will operate. It must be able to perform with a high degree of autonomy, because it is not practical to control it from Earth due to the 20-minute delay in communications.

RE: [Judi] Hi, I want to know why few women make it as astronauts. Thanx
Judi, This is an excellent question and is valid for both people of color and women. I do not know the answer, but will put forth the following. The activity has been historically dominated by white males, history and/or tradition (whether it is fair or not) takes time to change. The positive thing is that it IS changing. But it is much broader than the astronaut core, kids (ALL kids) must be encouraged and given the resources and opportunities to grow from their family, schools and communities in order to bring more balance into our society. NASA is doing its part and I would remind everyone that there is not a shuttle crew being launched these days that does not include at least one woman. We must do better and I hope we will!

I seem to be having a few problems on my end -- technical/network, but am working around them. I hope you are not experiencing the same problems. If you are, you can also view one of the archives from the previous training webcasts on this topic.
