In honor of the 100th anniversary of flight, Congress established the
U.S. Centennial of Flight Commission. The Commission will promote, enable,
and amplify the efforts of organizations and individuals planning to celebrate
the achievements of the Wright brothers and a century of powered flight
by serving as central resource and a catalyst for activities. The Commission
is encouraging national and international participation in the commemoration
of the centennial of powered flight by the public; educators and students;
Federal, state, and local government officials; members of civic and cultural
organizations; and members of the aviation and aerospace industry.

RE: [PattyNEWMFSC] Hi Debbie, We
will be creating Power Point presentations for the status of flight from
1903 to 2003. Can you share any great websites where our fourth grade
students can research information to help them with their presentations?
Thank you.
Patty: There are MANY great web sites. You can find a lot of them at http://www.centennialofflight.gov.
Also check out
http://www.grc.nasa.gov/WWW/Wright, the NASA site that will host all
that the agency is doing related to the Wrights and the centennial. Stay
tuned to the US Centennial of Flight Commission site, there is much more
coming.

RE: [LaRCTauna] How do you feel about
the controversy concerning North Carolina AND Ohio both laying claim to
the Wright Brothers Flight?
What the Wrights did was such an amazing accomplishment that I don't find
it surprising that everyone would like to be linked to it!!! The evolution
of aviation before and after the Wrights took the talents of many people
in various locations around the world. What is your state's involvement?
Have your kids researched your area's aviation history!

RE: [Sherise/NASAGlenn] I am joining
you from the NEW Urban worksheet
Hello to everyone and welcome to the chat. I saw the messages from Sherise,
Claudia, Mary, kpm, Jane, Canary, Steve, and Carol. I know that you are
all having a wonderful workshop experience!! Congratulations on your selection
for NEW!

RE: [steve/nasaglenn] Debbie, My
daughter, Theresa, is in ninth grade. She wants to fly a jet fighter for
the Navy. What advice would you give her to reach her dreams?
Steve: No reason your daughter or any other female can't become a military
pilot provided she studies hard and sets her might to making it happen.
Sound familiar? The opportunities for her to reach her career goals are
there. She might want to consider looking into one of the military academies.
[ DebbieGallaway

RE: [LaRCBain] What are some good
reading selections for students who are interested in aviation and aerospace?
Bain: There are so many!!! It's interesting to look at some of the private
pilot training guides if you want to get a taste of what you need to learn
as a pilot. "The Bishop's Boys" is a terrific book about the
Wrights. There is a ton of information on our web site and many references
to additional material.

RE: [Claudia/NASA] Debbie Can we
find a timeline for Famous Women in aviation at your website
There is a great timeline on the Women in Aviation International web site
that you can access through the matrix under for Educators and Students.
More will be added to the matrix soon. It is being reformatted and expanded
behind the scenes. There are over 6000 total links there now, so be sure
to check it out. I designed it to help educators find info quickly and
I hope that it is helpful in that way!

RE: [MikeT/NASAGLENN] Are there any
records of African Americans in aviation during its early years.
Mike: Absolutely!!! On the Consider a Career in Aviation poster under
posters on the www.centennialofflight.gov
site there are several African American Women. Also the Tuskeegee Airman
made sooo many contributions. There are many, many more sources, but that's
a good place to start!

RE: [ClevelandTeam] Will you be doing
anything specifically in the Cleveland area? We are the first group of
teachers from the Cleveland Municipal School District to participate in
the NEW Urban Program through NASA.
GRC is already involved in developing materials for the centennial of
flight celebrations and has oh so many things up and running already.
Check out: http://www.grc.nasa.gov/WWW/Wright.
Also there are plans in the works for GRC to host a reunion of the NACA
folks in 2003. Info about NACA can be found on Spacelink.

RE: [jackie/nasaglenn] This is my
first time chatting while on line. Well, here goes one for you. What were
your favorite grade levels while teaching?
Jackie: I taught K, 2nd, 3rd, and working with high school students as
well. I enjoyed them all!
[[ Lori/NASAChatHost

We are getting close to the end of today's webchat. Debbie may be able
to answer a few more questions. I want to thank all of our NEW participants
for tuning in and our NASA experts for their time and expertise :-)

RE: [LaRCBill] I am currently teaching
in a lower socio-economic high school. What key concepts do you suggest
I focus on to prepare my students for the future?
Bill: Wow! I don't have any magic formula! I have found that we need to
help kids acquire the tools they need to learn. We sure can't teach them
all that they need to know. I also know that once you have discovered
something that students are passionate about, you can teach them just
about anything! Of course, developing a "can do" attitude goes
a long way too, "Attitude
Determines Your Altitude!"
[ DebbieGallaway

RE: [JSC/Denise] Will you personally
be traveling and conducting events?
Denise: Yes, I am traveling and talking about the centennial of flight
and the related events. Check out the calendar on our site. I'll be at
Oshkosh next week. Our office is facilitating and coordinating events
rather then hosting.
[ DebbieGallaway/NASA
- 128 - 11:47:11 ]
Thanks for your questions!! It has been a pleasure. Please
check out our web site and get your kids involved in the centennial
celebrations!!!
[ DebbieGallaway

RE: [Carol/NASAGlenn] Are there any
Early Elementary activities/resources available to reinforce the commemoration
of the Centennial of Flight?
Carol: There are many resources for early elementary. Check out NASA,
FAA, EAA, and many others under Curriculum on the educational resources
matrix.

RE: [JSC/Norma] Just a quick hello
to you, Debbie, from our 30 teachers at JSC (25 from 14 states and 5 from
Wales). No need to answer, just want to say "HI!"
BIG hi to Norma!!!!
